The pink kissing gourami of pet-shop folklore. Grows much larger than most buyers expect — 25 cm is typical. The 'kiss' is two males locking jaws as a dominance contest, not affection. Needs a large tank with strong filtration.
Kissing Gourami (Helostoma temminckii) reaches 20–30 cm as an adult and needs a minimum tank of 300 L. Native to Southeast Asia, it lives in the all water column with a semi-aggressive (the kiss is a dominance display) temperament. Aim for 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–8.0, and 5–20 dGH hardness. Lifespan is 10–15 years with good care. Kissing Gourami can be kept singly or in a small group. Diet: omnivore (filter-feeder leaning), Pellet, flake, blanched veg, occasional frozen food. Filter-feeds on algae and biofilm. Plant-safe: No (grazes algae and soft plants). Shrimp-safe: No.
