Often sold as a 5 cm juvenile that grows into a 40 cm tank-buster within 3 years. Most home tanks cannot house an adult — buy only if a 450 L+ tank is genuinely available. For smaller setups, clown pleco or bristlenose are the right fit.
Common Pleco (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) reaches 40–50 cm as an adult and needs a minimum tank of 450 L. Native to Amazon basin, it lives in the bottom water column with a peaceful (becomes territorial with age) temperament. Aim for 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, and 5–20 dGH hardness. Lifespan is 15–20 years with good care. Common Pleco can be kept singly or in a small group. Diet: omnivore (vegetarian-leaning), Algae wafer, blanched veg (zucchini, cucumber), driftwood, occasional protein. Plant-safe: No (uproots and rasps soft plants). Shrimp-safe: Adults only.
