The choice comes down to one thing: CO2. A high-tech tank injects pressurised CO2, runs strong light and heavy dosing to grow plants fast, dense and colourful, including carpets and vivid reds. A low-tech tank uses no CO2, modest light and light feeding, growing hardy plants slowly and calmly. High-tech gives you faster, showier results for more money and more work. Low-tech is cheaper, more relaxed and far more forgiving. Neither is "better", they are different hobbies wearing the same glass box. Beginners are usually happier starting low-tech.
What actually changes
CO2 is the lever everything else hangs off. Add it, and plants photosynthesise several times faster, which means they can use more light and more nutrients, which means faster growth and richer colour, which means more trimming and tighter control. Take it away, and the whole system slows down and calms down.

The low-tech tank
A low-tech (or "Walstad-style") tank leans on plant choice and patience instead of gear. You pick species that thrive without CO2, plant them heavily, run modest light for six to eight hours, and let the tank find its balance. Growth is slow but steady, maintenance is a monthly trim and a weekly water change, and the tank shrugs off the odd missed dose or holiday.

The cost is effort and vigilance. Fast growth means weekly trimming, careful dosing, and a CO2 system to run on a timer and watch with a drop checker. Get the balance of light, CO2 and nutrients wrong and algae appears quickly, because the demanding plants stall and hand over the surplus.
Which should you choose?
Start with two honest questions.
- Do you want carpets and vivid reds? If yes, you need high-tech. Those plants simply do not perform without CO2.
- How much time and money do you want to spend? Low-tech is cheaper to build, cheaper to run, and asks for maybe an hour a week. High-tech asks for more of everything.
For a first tank, low-tech is the gentler on-ramp: it teaches you the fundamentals of cycling, water chemistry and maintenance without punishing every slip. You can always add CO2 later. Plenty of aquascapers keep one of each.
